SR22 Insurance

Handing over car keys after getting covered
Informational only. This article does not constitute insurance, legal, or financial advice. Coverage terms vary by carrier, policy, and jurisdiction. Full disclaimer.

An SR22 is a certificate your insurance company files with your state to prove you carry the required liability coverage — usually after a DUI, DWI, OVWI, driving without insurance, or certain other violations. It's not a separate kind of insurance; it's a filing added to a regular auto policy.

Located in Virginia or Florida? Your state may require an FR44 instead, which carries higher coverage limits. Live in California and don't own a car? See our California non-owner SR22 page.
